BIOFONIA

2024

Animated show as a live concert experience

BIOFONIA combines animation, music, and cultural exchange to bring audiences closer to the sounds and stories of the rainforest. At its heart, BIOFONIA is about collaboration between Danish artists and the Indigenous Guaraní people in the Mata Atlântica rainforest,  to share their perspectives and music.

The project is spearheaded by composer Mathias Madsen Munch, whose music Ronni Kot Wenzell, a Danish musician living in Rio de Janeiro, brings to life through the marimba. Together, the visuals and music create an experience that’s rooted in stories of life in the rainforest as told by the Guaraní.

The rainforest is full of life, culture, and history, and this project reflects that. With support from Fabricas de Cultura in Iguape and the Danish Cultural Institute in Brazil (Anders Hentze), we’ve been able to learn from and work directly with people who live in and care for the forest. During BIOFONIA, we invite audiences to sing in the Guaraní language, share stories about life in the rainforest, and display some of the beautiful handmade crafts brought back from Iguape. We believe it’s important for people to understand that the rainforest is home to real communities who have been connected to this land for generations.

BIOFONIA has also involved students from Bjerregrav Friskole, a small school outside Viborg. Over several months, 6th and 7th graders worked with us to develop ideas for the project. Their creativity and thoughts about the rainforest have been an important part of BIOFONIA from the very beginning.

The project was first shared as a prototype at Viborg Animation Festival 2024, with an introduction by Mathias Madsen Munch and a live performance by Ronni Kot Wenzell. Looking ahead, BIOFONIA will premiere in both Denmark and Brazil, including a special concert at COP30 with a full symphony orchestra.

BIOFONIA was made possible with support from the Danish Arts Foundation, Danish Culture Institute, Instituto Cultural da Dinamarca, Fabricas de Cultura in Iguape, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (OpEn), Viborg Animation Festival, Animok, and many others.
